Resilience is an ongoing practice to equitably improve the ability of people, organizations, systems, and assets to thrive in the face of chronic stresses and acute shocks by assessing the current situation to understand where we are, identifying targets for where we would like to be, and developing strategies to achieve our desired outcomes.

As we work to establish and maintain the practice of resilience, it is easy to continue to perpetuate the very inequities that reduce our collective resilience. If we approach things the way we always have, we will continue to increase inequities.

True resilience is practiced equitably. We have the opportunity to surface and challenge the assumptions our unconscious mind has created about the world around us and therefore how we approach resilience. We can take responsibility by developing the necessary consciousness and taking consistent, practical actions to build a practice of resilience that works for all of us.

A historically rooted system of dehumanizing assumptions, behavior, and actions by individuals and institutions based on ideologies that reinforce the superiority and power of white people and the inferiority and powerlessness of people of color while harming both. The assumptions and ideologies that can lead to actions that hold up the system of racism are embedded in our institutions, policies, and culture – and therefore embedded in all of us. We are conditioned to see the world through prescribed lenses that steadily but stealthily fuel the system of racism through a continuous process.

Every person and organization is infected with implicit bias that can lead to our unconscious participation in upholding social injustice. The most pervasive and longstanding form of implicit bias is racial implicit bias, the virus that can lead to the disease of racism. However, we do not have a shared understanding of the complexity of racism, how it works, or what it means in our personal and professional lives.

There is an opportunity to eradicate the system of racism. It requires all of us ---every person and every organization--- to take responsibility by developing the necessary consciousness and critical thinking skills to facilitate consistent, practical actions. We have to challenge the infection of implicit racial bias in our lives and organizations to prevent it from becoming the disease of racism.

Community engagement is the process of building relationships and working collaboratively with groups of people affiliated by geographic proximity, special interest, or similar situations to address issues affecting them. Community engagement is a continuum that at its core is about equity.

There is a great deal a confusion about what community engagement actually is and why it's important. True community engagement ensures that the expertise of those impacted are part of the decisionmaking process. However, there are many barriers to doing this successfully including distrust between people and institutions, lack of strategic planning, historic and present day policies and practices that perpetuate inequities, and many more.

Building relationships in communities requires authentic approaches that consciously and intentionally create the space for critical thinking to challenge our assumptions and support collective problem solving. This is an opportunity to create better outcomes through partnering with communities, managing our bias, and activating our collective humility, humanity, and hope.
